When Chinese Buddhists made their way in to Japan the story of Pu Tai became interlaced with Hotei, one of the seven Japanese Shinto-gods of luck. It is Hotei that became known as the Happy Buddha. He is represented with long ears, a large stomach and carries or wears gold. Rubbing his ears is said to bring you wisdom, rubbing his stomach will bring you happiness and rubbing the gold will bring you wealth.     Detailed Description
    During the Liang Dynasty in China a Buddhist monk known as Pu Tai became regarded as an incarnation of the the Future Buddha. Pu Tai was famed for his benevolent nature as well as his protruding stomach. He was said to travel everywhere with a hemp bag (a pu tai) carried over his shoulder on a stick. When Chinese Buddhists made their way in to Japan the story of Pu Tai became interlaced with Hotei, one of the seven Japanese Shinto-gods of luck.

    It is Hotei that became known as the Happy Buddha. He is represented with long ears, a large stomach and carries or wears gold. Rubbing his ears is said to bring you wisdom, rubbing his stomach will bring you happiness and rubbing the gold will bring you wealth. Placing a Happy Buddha opposite a door or window will keep evil spirits away and bring well being to the room.
